Gucci Ready-to-Wear Spring 2016

Gucci Spring 2016 RTW - 4
If the Fall 2015 RTW Collection ushered in an era of uncertainty and excitement with the rise of Alessandro Michele (newest Creative Director behind Gucci), this Spring 2016 RTW Collection took us firmly in the land of his rejuvenated Gucci woman, back from her respite. There was literally land and sea printed on a bohemian-style dress with terms like Obedience, Generosity, and Sincerity. If those words were any indication of where the brand is going, I’m willing to go along for the ride.

The school girl ensembles originally shown in Fall 2015 made quite a few repeat appearances — berets, flowers askew, signature Gucci red-and-green striping, oversized reading glasses, and pleated skirts were in heavy rotation. It was a remarkable thing the first time, but in a second take, it makes me wonder whether I should come to expect this in every collection. Some things didn’t strike a chord for me, including a pineapple tie paired with a white suit with a snake wrapped on the pant leg and a striped shirt with flowers over the chest.

The journey was a bit disjointed for me. Sheer pastel dresses were mixed with chinoiserie-style sportswear, fur-trimmed coats, and seventies jewel-tone suiting. Who exactly is his Gucci woman and where is she going? But with some looks, I didn’t even care — my favorite piece was a peacock floor-length gown with gold metallic gloves. I could lowkey see Rita Ora wearing this for a formal fashion-y event. Another favorite was a red button-down dress with contrasting scribble print worn by model Nicole Atieno.

Overall, I came away feeling mixed thoughts, but it may just be that I had too high expectations following the success of Fall 2015. Here’s to hoping for more clarity on his Gucci woman in the next collection.
