Billie Holiday (officially birthed as Eleanora Fagan) was born on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Raised primarily by her grandmother, the young girl endured a rough childhood while her mother worked various commuter jobs, thus having an adverse effect on valuable time spent with her daughter. As she grew older, Holiday began to perform at popular nightclubs in Harlem and began to nurture and cultivate a talent that soon became a polarizing force within the music realm. The bold songstress established a firm foundation that soon garnered an impressive following – with hits including “Strange Fruit“, “God Bless The Child” and “When A Man Loves A Woman” – Holiday altered the state of pop and jazz while acting as a pioneer for generations to come.

I truly adore this icon’s style. I have to admit, she embraced a certain realness that makes her that much more awesome! From her statement furs to the adornment of her signature white gardenias, her fashion sense was quite versatile. Lady Day could rock any and everything! As I researched her sartorial gems, I realized she was drawn to interesting prints, turbans, graphic (yet unique) accessories and intricately designed gowns. In addition, the woman even slayed in a mean bold lip! Her looks always bordered along the lines of classic and innovative without coming off as being forced; furthermore, she also possessed such breathtaking grace. Side note: Can we get into that flawless hair?!
